EMV

The EMV standard was originally developed by Europay, MasterCard and Visa, and is now managed by EMVCo, a company jointly owned by Visa, MasterCard and JCB.

It provides the basis for how chip payment cards should interoperate with terminals to enable transactions to be carried out securely anywhere in the world. The EMV requirements can be broken down into two separate levels, as follows: 

• Level 1 (IFM):
  - mechanical, electrical and basic applications levels to ensure reliable communication with the card;
• Level 2 (kernel):
  - complex applications level, including selecting applications, checking cardholder details, risk management;

EMV certification

All Thyron products that accept EMV cards are certified by EMVCo to both Level 1 and Level 2.
The overall terminal payment application is certified by the acquirer with the card associations.
